Postcards from Whitefield: On the Road with the Eastern Illustrating and Publishing Company Whitefield, Maine, USA — On Friday, June 30 from 6-8 pm, Matt Wheeler, photo archivist for the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, ME, will present an illustrated talk, Postcards from Whitefield, at Sheepscot General Store, 98 Town House Rd, Whitefield, ME. The slide show and talk will include a short film about the postcard company, as well as historic images of Whitefield and surrounding towns.
The Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company was founded in 1909 in Belfast, ME by Rudolph Herman Cassens. Cassens’ goal was to photograph small towns and rural areas from Maine to California, producing “real photo” postcards that would be valued for promoting tourism. Cassens did not fulfill his dream of photographing the entire country, but his company did produce over 50,000 glass plate and acetate negatives of New England and Upstate New York between 1909 and 1947. The collection features innumerable views of historic businesses, family homes and local landmarks.
The images are fascinating on many levels. They transport viewers back to a time when the roads were still finished with gravel, horse-drawn carriages outnumbered cars, coastlines were undeveloped, and elms lined the streets. The collection is now part of the archive at Penobscot Marine Museum, and continues to grow as more negatives which “escaped” from the collection are located and acquired. Last
year, archivist Kevin Johnson, along with Maine State Historian Earle Shettleworth and Maine historian William H. Bunting, published Maine on Glass, a photo book which examines the Maine portion of the Eastern Collection. Copies will be available for sale the night of the event. There will be no cash box on hand; if interested, please bring cash or a check in the amount of $31.60.
PMM features over 90,000 images from its collections in their online database.
This event is free and open to everyone.
